In 2012, three young artists came together for a group exhibition at Hanina Gallery: Yifat Giladi, Oscar Abosh, and Sivan Grosz. The exhibition, titled Her Parents, was presented at Hanina Gallery and dealt with intergenerational relationships in relation to parents, their past, and their legacy.
In Yifat’s case, this stemmed from her position as the granddaughter of Aharon Giladi, one of Israel’s canonical painters, whose work frequently addressed images of families and motherhood as part of the idealization of kibbutz society. In Oscar’s case, questions of migration and longing emerged. In Sivan’s case, the work related to being the daughter of parents who, following immigration, did not fulfill themselves as artists.
It is interesting to bring the three together again, thirteen years later. Today, Yifat Giladi and Sivan Grosz are members of Nulobaz Gallery, while Oscar Abosh is a member of Hanina Gallery, which is also an artist-run cooperative gallery.
The renewed exhibition offers a unique opportunity to further explore intergenerational relationships, this time from the perspective of parents and mature artists.
Oscar is the father of Zoya; Yifat is the mother of Maayan; and Sivan is the mother of Bari, Sol, and Lev. Each child is chosen and loved as though they were an only child. From this derives the exhibition’s title, which also alludes to a familiar social status.
Today, the artists are parents themselves, approaching intergenerational relationships from a different perspective. This time, the emphasis is on themselves as parents. Have they fulfilled themselves as parents? Have they fulfilled themselves as artists? Have they realized their own dreams, or those of their parents?
The exhibition takes on additional meaning in relation to culture at large and in relation to the concepts of mother and father, mother-son and father-daughter relationships, the Oedipus complex, the Electra complex, and other cultural references discussed in an accompanying printed text.
The hope is that the works will speak for themselves.
