Shony Rivnay is a multimedia artist whose works revolve around painting, video, sculpture, and performance. He is a provocateur who challenges ways of thinking and seeing. He uses these mediums to create interventions in space and time, react to social and political events, and to reflect on existential questions regarding our current state of being.
Throughout his career Rivnay has been exploring the thread and the borders of the irresistible and the loveable alongside the dysfunctional, as a way of observing society and nature. His early works respond to the notion of art as a promotional medium, and question its true function in society. Through these works Rivnay explored the challenging psychological effects of our inherent human need for love and acceptance. Here, he enhances a paradoxical existence through formalistic attributes: on the one hand he creates work that is highly stylized and inviting, and on the other hand these works of art are often dysfunctional and incomplete. In a playful and performative manner Rivnay brings forth notions of potency and decay as well as beauty and fragility.
His most recent paintings allow an inclusive and more focused look at our being, both physiologically and psychologically. The works act at a micro and macro level of seeing and experiencing, and are part of a free, dynamic, and non-linear memory process. The paintings are conceptual yet lay on the verge of the intentional and the unpredictable.
