The exhibition presents two lens-based bodies of work, in video and photography. The video work, 30 minutes in length, is composed of hundreds of screenshots collected over the years from films and television series. Medanblik began taking screenshots during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, and has continued this process to the present day. Over the course of this process, she has created an extensive archive of images in which the word “truth” appears, each time within a different narrative and visual context.
In this way, an archive of reflections has accumulated, which has been assembled into a continuous discourse engaging with the concept of truth through subtitles that appear before the viewer, below and above the image. Alongside the video, a series of twelve framed prints is presented, featuring blurred backgrounds—indistinct spaces devoid of figures, similar to one another in viewpoint and structure.
Through the acts of photographing, cropping, isolating, and reassembling the sequence, Medanblik seeks to think, speak, render present, and reflect on the notion of truth—on the ways in which it is mediated to us, and how we learn to see, read, believe, and rethink its place in our lives.
