Alternative Nation brings together Zuzu Gallery and Nulobaz, two cooperative initiatives that emerged simultaneously and independently in September 2017. The exhibition marks a shared trajectory shaped by chance, parallel beginnings, and a broader cultural moment that saw the rise of alternative and artist-run spaces in Israel and beyond.
Nulobaz is a cooperative, non-profit art gallery located in the Florentin neighborhood of Tel Aviv, operated voluntarily by artists who collectively share responsibility for its ongoing activity. The gallery is rooted in democratic values and mutual commitment, fostering independent artistic practice and an open, expanding artistic discourse that engages with its local context, the wider art scene, and broader cultural frameworks.
Presented at Zuzu Gallery, Alternative Nation pays tribute to cooperative galleries and alternative exhibition spaces as vital sites for collective action, artistic autonomy, and cultural resilience.
