The exhibition The Collectivists – A Group Portrait brings together six collaborative galleries from Tel Aviv under one roof at the Artists House. Members of each gallery were invited to undertake a self-curatorial action: to establish a key and a brief collective biography that would articulate the portrait of their group practice.
Participating in the exhibition are Alfred Gallery, P8 Gallery, Hanina Gallery, Indie Gallery, Benjamin Gallery, and the young gallery Nulovz. Each gallery selected subjects and themes that represent and reflect its distinct “DNA” in different ways.
The artists, who are usually engaged in the operational and administrative management of their spaces—serving as venues for solo exhibitions and various collaborations with guest artists—were invited here to present themselves and their practice as a collective. This framework and task became an activating force, challenging the foundations upon which each gallery rests—foundations that are often taken for granted and rarely articulated, yet emerge through the shared artistic labor and relationships among their members.
The coming together, the search for a guiding idea, and the identification of points of connection and relation between the works generated an introspective process—one that seeks to pause, linger, and observe. These actions foster a deeper gaze into the works of the members, their contexts and representations, and examine whether such elements exist, how they function, and how they shape the agenda, texture, and unique character of each collective
